Caregiving affects your body, your mind and your money. Stress, worry, depression and grief are common. Most family caregivers don't get the information, training or help they need to keep going over time. Caregiver support services are there to fill that gap.

The Support System

What Caregiver Support Services Include

Caregiver support includes many programs. They help you give better care while you take care of yourself too.

Respite Care

Respite care gives caregivers a break. It can be help at home, an adult day program or a short stay somewhere else. It helps caregivers rest, keep up with other duties and avoid burnout. Area Agencies on Aging offer local respite programs for eligible caregivers of older adults under the Older Americans Act.

Counseling and Emotional Support

Counseling and support groups help with the stress, grief, loneliness and worry of caregiving. Local aging agencies offer them at low or no cost.

Education and Training

Many caregivers handle medicines, personal care and daily tasks with no training. Classes teach practical care skills, how to talk with your loved one and how to work with doctors and benefits offices. Learn how to make a care plan.

Financial Assistance and Benefits Counseling

Benefits counseling helps you find programs you may qualify for. These include Medicaid, Medicare, respite funding, meals at home, rides and other local help. Some states give caregivers extra money help, like Pennsylvania's Act 20 of 2021. What you can get depends on your state and county.

A Different Kind of Caregiving

Support for Grandparent Caregivers

Nearly half of grandparents raising grandchildren are 60 or older. Many are managing their own health too. Local Area Agencies on Aging help them find support groups and programs. These offer information, referrals, respite care and time with others in the same spot.

Common Questions

Caregiver Support: Common Questions

Caregiver support services are programs and resources for family members who care for an older adult, a person with a disability or a loved one with a serious illness. They include respite care, counseling, training, financial help and links to local services. The goal is to help caregivers keep going without giving up their own health.

In most communities, Area Agencies on Aging are the main place to find local caregiver programs. The Eldercare Locator (1-800-677-1116) connects caregivers with their local Area Agency on Aging. Ellipses helps caregivers see which programs they qualify for and walks them through applying.
